A Wisconsin judge has ruled that two young girls accused of stabbing their 12-year-old friend multiple times after being influenced by Slender Man stories are competent to stand trial.

On Thursday, Waukesha County Circuit Judge Michael Bohren found that 13-year-old Anissa Weier is competent to stand trial for attempted homicide, ABC News reports. Weier was evaluated by three doctors, who each gave a testimony about their findings. The doctor hired by the prosecution found her competent, while the defense's two doctors argued she was incompetent.

The second suspect, Morgan Geyser, 13, was ruled competent after she waived her right to a hearing.

The girls have been charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide.

Weier and Geyser allegedly plotted for months on how to kill their friend Payton Leutner in order to please a dark, fictional character known as Slender Man. They then lured Leutner into a southeastern Wisconsin park after a sleepover and stabbed her 19 times using large kitchen knives in May. All three girls were 12 at the time of the attack.

After she was presumably left for dead, Leutner managed to crawl out of the woods and was discovered by a bicyclist who called 911.

The suspects were found walking toward a national forest where they said they believed Slender Man lived in a mansion. They told investigators they decided to kill Leutner because they believed it would grant them favor with the figure.

Online stories about Slender Man state he kidnaps and kills children. Police said the girls were convinced he was real.

Florida police also believe the Slender Man may have inspired a 14-year-old girl to set her family's house on fire while her mother and brother were sleeping in September. The seventh-grader admitted to police she tried to kill her mother and 9-year-old brother by burning down their home in Port Richey because she was upset about being disciplined around her bed time, reports WTSP.
