Nebraska police say an 11-month-old boy wearing only a diaper was found in a dumpster in a La Vista apartment complex on Wednesday evening.

Identified as Angel Ramirez-Marinero, officials say the toddler was discovered when a man who lives at the Alpine Village Apartments heard a whimper coming from the dumpster. That is when he looked inside and found the boy around 5:30 p.m. Although the child was covered in lint and has scrapes and bruises, he was otherwise in good health, reports The Associated Press.

"Obviously, it looks as though the child was abandoned there wearing nothing but a diaper," said La Vista Police Capt. Bryan Waugh, according to NBC affiliate WOWT.

About an hour later, police say the boy's mother, 45-year-old Jesus I. Marinero, was found dead in Omaha. Officials said that her death has been declared a homicide without releasing any further details.

Earlier that day, Marinero and her two sons were reported missing around 4 a.m. police said.

Police are now searching for the woman's eldest 5-year-old son, the baby's older brother Josue Ramirez-Marinero. An Amber alert was issued for the older boy, however it was later cancelled after a Jeep they were looking for was found and searched on Thursday. Inside they found two empty car seats, but Josue remains missing.

Officials say the vehicle was the main basis of the Amber alert and that it was necessary to cancel it once it had been tracked down.

Omaha police spokesman Michael Pecha announced that the family recently had an Omaha address, but that the house was destroyed in a fire.

Neighbors within the community say they are shocked by the frightening news story.

"I just can't believe that someone can do that, just discard a baby like it's a piece of trash," said Emile Winkle.
