Season 2 of "Gotham" will yield 16-22 episodes that are plum-filled with hardboiled crime, drama and villainous enthusiasm.

Nicholas D'Agosto will reprise his role as Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face, during the forthcoming season. Via Twitter, D'Agosto said, "Thank you to all of you @Gotham and #HarveyDent fans for your enthusiasm. I can't wait to join more of the fun as a regular in Season 2!"

But that isn't all: The second season of the pre-Batman series will also boast more familiar faces -- and a few new ones. Morena Baccarin, who plays Dr. Leslie Thompkins, like D'Agosto, is also a new series regular, as well as Chris Chalk who portrays Lucius Fox. Edward Nygma will return to solidify his path toward becoming the Riddler, after committing murder during the first season. Clayface and Mad Hatter are said to make an appearance. Also, tragic criminal Mr. Freeze and the not-so-serious maniac the Joker will appear.

"We're going to find out how the hell Jerome, the proto-Joker we met earlier in [the first] season, connects with the Joker as people known him," showrunner Bruno Heller told The Hollywood Reporter. "That's the big focus of the beginning of the second season. We're going to tell the story of how the Joker came to be. ... That's teaser enough, I think."

It's rumored that Harley Quinn won't make an appearance during the Season 2, but the show is looking to showcase a female to stand as a counterpart to the Joker, who's known best for his green hair and face-splitting grin.

With mobster Fish Mooney out of the picture, there's a fair amount of room for sinister players in Gotham, although some fans worry that the surplus of malevolent characters may prompt a villain overload. This is particularly true with the backstories of Scarecrow and Hugo Strange still to come. Also, let's not forget that Jack Gruber is still on the run.

Additionally, let's not forget that ambitious umbrella-wielding Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, has risen in the ranks and has knighted himself the new King of Gotham.

"Gotham" will return in the fall and will on FOX.
