Although the Season 10 finale of "Bones" felt more like a conclusive series finale, the show will be back in full for another season this fall.

During the finale, which was titled "The Next in the Last," the Jeffersonian team tracked down the protégé of the notorious serial killer Christopher Pelant, who was killed earlier in the series. However, along the way, both Booth and Brennan decided that it was time for a career change so they resigned from their positions at the Jeffersonian to begin a new journey. Meanwhile, Hodgins decided that he and Angela should donate the stolen $4 billion she recovered to charity and remain at the Jeffersonian.

In an interview with TVLine, executive producer Stephen Nathan opened up about the season finale, Angela and Hodgins' shocking decision to stay at the Jeffersonian, and what's to come in Season 11.

When asked why the season finale felt like a series finale, Nathan admitted that the writers planned the episode before the show was renewed for another season.

"We were tasked with doing two episodes in one. The one thing we wouldn't compromise was our relationship with the audience. We couldn't have an open-ended end if it was a series finale," Nathan said. "That would have been unfair to the people who have been watching for 10 years. If this was really going to be it, we wanted it to be the end. Now, at the same time, once we were kind of down the road and the show got picked up -- we knew this was a possibility -- there had to be some kind of subtextual something going on that gave us the feel that it could keep going. So that's what we did our best to do. And it gives us a great challenge for next season to come back from this."

The showrunner went on to tease that "there'll be a bit of a time jump" when they kick off the new season and that something will lure Booth and Brennan back to the Jeffersonian.

Nathan also provided context as to why Hodgins and Angela decided not to move to Paris and how this will affect their relationship moving forward.

"There was something always indefinite about Hodgins' feelings about moving to Paris. Because he loves her, he [would do] it, of course. But she saw that. It just allowed us to see their relationship in a very crucial situation, see how two people in a life-changing situation really respond and what that means for their relationship. ... We can't do scenes in Paris, and Hodgins and Angela work in the lab. To bring them back, it would have been a rerun of the other episode we did where everybody was called back to help Cam. We just wanted this to be different and based on their relationship rather than some kind of goofy plot twist," he said.

The EP also confirmed that someone else will replace Brennan at the Jeffersonian at the beginning of Season 11.

In another interview with TVLine, Nathan teased that it is likely that Hodgins' brother Jeffery will return this fall.

"We were dying to see his brother [in Season 10], but there was an availability issue with the actor (Jonno Roberts)," he said. "But we will definitely see him again. It's a wonderful storyline, one that we definitely want to go back and explore much more."
