When Season 3 of "Under the Dome" concludes on Sept. 10 it will be the last time fans will get to see the residents of Chester's Mill.

According to Entertainment Weekly, CBS announced on Aug. 31 that the series was not picked up for a fourth season.

"Two years ago, 'Under the Dome' broke new ground in the summer and became an instant hit on CBS, as well as with viewers around the world," said the chairman of CBS Entertainment, Nina Tassler. "'Dome's' event storytelling and multi-platform business model paved the way for more original summer programming with the successful rollouts of 'Extant' and 'Zoo.' We're excited to present the final chapter in Chester's Mill as the story comes full circle, with the 'Dome' coming down as dramatically as it went up."

The show, based off of the novel by author Stephen King about a town that gets trapped under a mysterious invisible dome, premiered on June 2013 and has been running for three seasons.

Over the last two years the series has seen its share of high and low ratings, which brought about speculation of a possible cancellation in the near future, reported Variety.

Rumours, of the show coming to an end, were originally speculated at San Diego Comic Con when the show's executive producer, Tim Schlattmann, revealed that the show's mysteries would be solved by the end of Season 3.

"We are answering all the questions ... by the end of the season," said Schlattmann. "We threw a lot of stuff at you in the first two hours. By the end of the season, you will know everything. I usually don't use this language ... but things are gonna get bananas."

Tassler further fueled the rumors during an "Under the Dome" panel at the Television Critics' Association summer press tour last month when Tassler confirmed that Season 3 could also serve as a series finale.

"Well, what I'll tell you is the dome is coming down at the end of this season, but that opens up a host of other storytelling opportunities," she said. "You just don't know what will happen when the dome comes down. So we are not making a decision just yet."

"Under the Dome" airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on CBS.
