Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Simona Halep advanced to the second round after defeating their respective opponents on Day 2 of the 2015 US Open tennis on Tuesday at Flushing Meadows in New York.

Federer started his quest for his 18th Grand Slam title on a high note, as he cruised to an impressive 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 victory against unseeded Leonardo Mayer of Argentina at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion, who won the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati before the tournament, quickly built a 5-0 lead in the first set and did not let Mayer get into his rhythm.

Federer, a five-time US Open champion, sustained the momentum in the second and third sets en route to the straight-set victory. After the match, the 34-year-old Swiss said the win eased some pressure on his shoulders.

"I feel good now," Federer said in a post-game interview. "I actually wasn't so confident yesterday and today. I just felt like maybe could be one of those matches I just couldn't see it coming. So thankfully I took this match extremely serious. I thought at times almost I was taking it a bit too serious."

Meanwhile, third seed Andy Murray of Great Britan kept his composure and scored a 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 against Nick Kyrgios of Australia in their first-round match.

Kyrgios displayed disturbing antics throughout the match, but Murray stayed focus. The 2012 US Open champion said that the match was closer than what most people think based on the scoreline because he thinks Kyrgios could have been one of the seeded players in the tournament.

In other notable men's matches, fifth seed Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland moved on the second round with a 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 win against Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain, while sixth seed Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic cruised to a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 victory against Bjorn Fratangelo of USA.

In the women's side, second seed Simona Halep of Romania also booked a spot in the second round with a 6-2, 3-0 win after her opponent, Marina Erakovic, of New Zealand failed to finish the match.

Fourth seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark had a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Jamie Loeb of USA, while fifth seed Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic defeated Laura Siegemund of Germany 6-1, 6-1. Sixth seed Lucie Safarova of Czech Republic suffered a 6-4, 6-1 upset loss to Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine.
