A homeless man discovered three military weapons that were stolen from an Army Reserve base while rummaging through garbage bags at a park in New York City last week.

On Sunday, officials announced that a 51-year-old vagabond was collecting recyclable bottles and cans on the morning of Nov. 11, when he came across a trash bag filled with firearms in Mullaly Park near Yankee Stadium in The Bronx. He then reported the fully automatic M4 carbine and two 9mm handguns to police, reports NBC News.

Investigators traced the weapons back to a break-in at a military armory in Massachusetts that occurred on Nov. 14. The U.S. attorney's office in Massachusetts also arrested and charged 34-year-old James Walter Morales with taking six M4 rifles and 10 Sig Sauer M11 9-mm. pistols from the Lincoln Stoddard Army Reserve Center vault in Worcester. Authorities say they found six of the other 16 guns stolen in the heist, however it is not known if the others had been located. The weapons were reported stolen until two days later, reports The New York Daily News.

Officials say Morales, an Army reservist, was found and arrested in Long Island, New York. He was out on bail after being accused of child rape when he allegedly broke into the armory using a power saw. Now he is facing federal charges for allegedly stealing the military weapons.

According to an FBI affidavit, officers say Morales was seen in a surveillance video leaving the armory with duffel bags and placing them in a black car. Meanwhile, investigators found his DNA at the scene.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office in New York said Morales waived identity and probable cause hearings during his court appearance on Friday.

Morales was a member of the reserve from September 2008 until November 2013 before he was discharged. His leave, however, was not related to any legal trouble.
