On Saturday, Bristol Palin and her beau Dakota Meyer took to Instagram to announce their engagement, E! News reports.

Palin shared a photo of herself kissing Meyer and another photo of her engagement ring.

Palin is the 24-year-old daughter of former Alaska governor and former GOP vice presidential candidate, Sarah Palin. Meyer is a 26-year-old Marine veteran from Kentucky who received the Medal of Honor in 2009, E! News reports. People adds that it was President Barack Obama who awarded Meyer with the Medal of Honor following his successful attempt at saving the members of his embedded training team during a prolonged 2009 firefight.

Sarah Palin also addressed the couple's engagement in a statement to People and said she is honored to welcome Meyer to the Palin family.

"Our families couldn't be happier for Bristol and Dakota," Sarah said. "We're honored to welcome Dakota into our family. He's an American hero and patriot whose service to our country -- like all his fellow Medal of Honor recipients -- has been above and beyond the call of duty; but even more important is he's a good and kind man who loves Bristol and Tripp, and is loved by them."

People claims that Bristol and Meyer met last year while Meyer was in Alaska to film an episode of "Amazing America." The two instantly connected, but kept a low profile about their relationship, says E! News. Prior to announcing their engagement, Bristol and Meyer posted very few photos together on social media.

The newly engaged couple have yet to announce the date of their wedding.
