'Clueless' Creator Announces the Film will be a Broadway Musical
The writer and director of beloved classic teen film "Clueless" has announced plans for a musical version to premiere on Broadway.
"Clueless" starred Alicia Silverstone and Stacey Dash as best friends Cher and Dionne. "Ant-Man" star Paul Rudd and "Scrubs" star Donald Faison were their love interests, and Brittany Murphy was new girl Tai. The film is a modern adaption of Jane Austen's novel "Emma" and become popular for its catch phrases, fashion and embodiment of the teenage generation.
Director Amy Heckerling revealed to Entertainment Tonight that plans for a musical are underway.
"I've written the, what they call the book and its a jukebox musical," she said.
The musical will not, however, include original music, but will include "already-known tunes" reports Billboard. The film included several well-known songs of the '90s, which fans would quickly recognized if used on stage.
Most popular was the song "Rollin With My Homies" by rapper Coolio, which was used for the party scene in the film.
The production group responsible for Broadway hits like "Jersey Boys," "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" and "Into the Woods," Dodger Theatricals, will be producing Heckerling's play. Heckerling confirmed that "Rock of Ages" director Kristin Hanggi will direct. The successful show ran on Broadway for six years.
The biggest challenge the production will face will be to cast the musical, according to Heckerling. The characters are so popular that finding the right actors to portray them will be a crucial task.
The films impact has not withered over the years with it being introduced to new generations through various references to the film in today's pop culture. Most recently it was by Australian rapper Iggy Azalea.
For the music video to her summer hit single, "Fancy," Azalea imitated the film by portraying the character of Cher and included other major characters. The video featured popular scenes from the film and Azalea wore the character's most popular outfits.
