The sequel to the science fiction thriller movie, "Prometheus," was announced in 2014 but since then, little details have been revealed on its progress. But a recent article in the magazine, Total Film, offered new information about the film, which it claimed is set to start shooting in January 2016.

Earlier this year, Collider reported that the second movie has been given a release date for March 2016. However, at that time, it was unclear whether Ridley Scott will be back to direct the movie.

It was revealed that the studio, at that time, has just found a scriptwriter in the identity of Michael Green and is set to proceed with the development of the sequel.

Scarce details about "Prometheus 2" came out after then. But Scified recently shared a scanned copy of Total Film's latest issue that has an interview with the director and the lead cast members of his latest movie, "The Martian," featuring Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain.

In the article, the writer noted that Scott has since returned to shooting science fiction movies with "Prometheus" in 2012 ,after taking a break from the genre. Scott helmed "Aliens" in 1979 and "Blade Runner" in 1982, two films that have contributed to the popularity of science fiction movies.

The writer also noted that "Prometheus 2" will begin shooting in January next year.

But Scott has yet to confirm this.

If the production will start in January, it is very unlikely that the sequel will be finished in time for the March 2016 release date that was previously reported.

The movie is reportedly set to continue the story and mission of Elizabeth Shaw, played by Noomi Rapace, and android Michael Fassbender, to meet the Engineers in their planet and unravel the mystery of the beginning of humanity.

This would probably see the movie take a deeper look into the philosophical aspect of the film, which was teased in the first film.

One thing that Scott has promised in previous reports is the exclusion of xenomorphs in the sequel. The appearance of the monster in "Prometheus" connected the movie to "Aliens" and acted as a prequel of sorts.

But the director noted that, "the beast is done."

"There's only so much snarling you can do. I think you've got to come back with something more interesting," he told Yahoo! Movies. "And I think we've found the next step. I thought the Engineers were quite a good start."

No announcement on the final release date of "Prometheus 2" has been given yet.
