Apple Inc. secured another win as the top smartphone manufacturer in the United States (U.S.) but lost in the mobile operating system market share to Google.

According to digital measurement and analytics provider comScore, data from its MobiLens and Mobile Metrix showed Apple ranked as the top smartphone manufacturer with 41.3 percent of the OEM market share for the three months ending in February 2014. In comparison to comScore's previous three months worth of data, ending in November 2013, Apple represented 41.2 percent of the top smartphone manufacturers market share. Apple, therefore, grew its OEM market share by 0.1 percentage point.

Samsung showed the most percentage growth, but it was not enough to move outside second place. Samsung's market share grew to 27 percent once February concluded, which is an increase from 26 percent during the three months ending in November last year.

LG improved its rankings from fourth place to third courtesy of a 0.3 percent boost. LG garnered 6.8 percent of the top smartphone manufacturer market share in the U.S., an increase from last year's 6.5 percent.

Motorola, due to LG's improvement, slipped to fourth place. Motorola lost 0.4 percentage points for a 6.3 percent market share finish.

HTC maintained its fifth place position while suffering the worst percentage loss among the aforementioned manufacturers. HTC lost 1 percentage point from the three months ending in November to the same time period concluding in February this year. HTC finished February with 5.4 percent of the OEM market share, which is down from last year's 6.4 percent.

comScore noted in its April report that 163.2 million people in the U.S. are smartphone owners, which accounted for 68.2 percent of the mobile phone market penetration based on data collected during the three months ending in February, which is an increase of 7 percentage points from November.

While Apple topped the OEM market share, it failed to secure first place in the smartphone platforms ranks. comScore revealed the Google Android platform maintained first place with 52.1 percent of the market share in the U.S. Android was able to uphold its rank due to a 0.2 percentage point improvement from its 51.9 percent during the three month average ending in November 2013.

Apple's iOS platform maintained second place while increasing its market share by 0.1 percentage point for a 41.3 percent finish.

Microsoft's Windows Phone continued to improve its market share as it defeated BlackBerry for third place. Windows Phone finished the three months ending in February with 3.4 percent of the market share, up from 3.1 percent in November.

BlackBerry slipped to fourth following a 0.6 percentage point loss between November and February. BlackBerry finished the latest three-month average with 2.9 percent market share.

Symbian consecutively placed fifth due to losing 0.0 percent, therefore maintaining its 0.2 percent market share.
