World Boxing Council middleweight champion Saul Alvarez's next fight may happen during the Cinco de Mayo weekend.

According to Golden Boy Promotions Vice President Eric Gomez, "Canelo" will most likely return on May 7, Boxing Scene reported. However, with respect to other details, they still have not talked about them yet thoroughly.

"We're looking at a couple of possibilities but we're going to sit down like we always do with 'Canelo' and his entire team and discuss opponents, venue and all that stuff after the holidays. Obviously there's a lot of options right now so it's just a matter of getting our heads together and coming to an agreement with what we're going to do," Gomez said.

Alvarez, who won via a unanimous decision against the Puerto Rican warrior Miguel Cotto on Nov. 21, may now have a voluntary defense, per the WBC's ruling on his supposed immediate showdown with interim champion Gennady Golovkin, the Boxing Scene noted.

"Both Alvarez and Golovkin shall be entitled to make a voluntary defense of their corresponding championships, so as to maximize the interest on their highly anticipated showdown," the WBC wrote in a statement.

Therefore, Alvarez may find another exciting opponent prior to the expected explosive battle with the undefeated Kazakh fighter, who also holds the International Boxing Organization, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation crowns.

Is it possible for an Alvarez vs. Cotto 2?

Since Alvarez can choose his next foe, will he consider having a rematch with Cotto early next year?

Freddie Roach told Fight Hype that he wants another bout between his fighter and the 25-year-old Mexican. According to the Hall of Fame trainer, Cotto is also interested with his idea as they "both think he won the fight."

Golovkin is ready to face other challengers, too.

Meanwhile, Golovkin's camp is already planning what's their next move to abide with the WBC's decision. Indeed, Team Golovkin is already eyeing worthy opponents for this window of opportunity given to them, noted Boxing Scene.

"Triple G's" promoter, Tom Loeffler shared that they are looking into colliding with the victor of the Dec. 19 World Boxing Organization title fight between Andy Lee and Billy Joe Saunders. Their next option is for "GGG" to clash with WBA "regular" champion Danny Jacobs, who just stopped the clock in the first round during his bout with Peter Quillin on Dec. 5 in Brooklyn, New York, per BoxRec.

Will the Alvarez-Golovkin showdown be truly ready in the latter part of next year?
