A Texas grand jury decided not to indict anyone in connection with the jailhouse death of Sandra Bland, a prosecutor confirmed Monday.

A Waller County grand jury determined no federal crime was committed by either the sheriff's office, or the jailers in charge of Bland, who died in a Southeast Texas county jail last July, The Chicago Tribune reports.

Prosecutor Darrell Jorden said the jury will reconvene in January on the matter of Brian Encinia, the white trooper who arrested Bland, as they were unable to come to a decision on whether he should face charges.

"After presenting all the evidence as it relates to the death of Sandra Bland, the grand jury did not return an indictment," said Jorden, one of the five special prosecutors on the case. "The grand jury also considered things that occurred at the jail and did not return an indictment."

Bland, an online activist and supporter of the Black Lives Matter Movement, was arrested in July during a routine traffic stop in Waller County, nearby Houston. Encinia allegedly pulled her over for not signaling a lane change, but Bland protested and an argument ensued, after which Bland reported the officer assaulted her.

The case drew nationwide attention after the 28-year-old Naperville woman was found dead in her cell three days later. A medical examiner determined Bland hanged herself, but relatives and others suspected foul play.

Bland's family said they were dissatisfied with how the case was handled, particularly the lack of communication from the county appointed prosecutors. They said they were never interviewed about Bland's death and were not updated on the evidence or court proceedings.

"I simply can't have faith in a system that's not inclusive of my family," said Bland's mother, Geneva Reed-Veal, at a news conference in Chicago. "We're supposed to have an investigation to show us what's happening. We know what we've been listening to in the media ... but we don't have any real evidence."

The jury's decision was met with criticism from public figures, such as Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

"Sandra Bland should not have died while in police custody," Sen. Sanders said in a statement obtained by Latin Post. "There's no doubt in my mind that she, like too many African-Americans who die in police custody, would be alive today if she were a white woman. My thoughts are with her family and her loved ones tonight. We need to reform a very broken criminal justice system."
