A brawl broke out Thursday afternoon on the campus of an elementary school in Columbus, Ohio and came to an end with two victims sustaining gunshot wounds at around the time that the school was dismissing its students for the day.

According to reports, the two individuals wounded in the melee that took place on the grounds of Liberty Elementary School included a 14-year-old male and a 20-year-old male.

Both suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to nearby hospitals, Headlines & Global News reports. The 14-year-old victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Police officials say that the shooting occurred at approximately 3:38 p.m. EST as teachers were letting elementary school students out for the afternoon. School officials immediately ushered the children back inside and put Liberty Elementary on lockdown as police arrived and secured the scene.

The unidentified shooter who opened fire just feet from the school managed to evade law enforcement and police officials told reporters that they don't yet have a suspect in the shooting but that an investigation is ongoing.

According to a report from the Columbus Dispatch, a witness says that a group of approximately 10 young males were gathered outside of the elementary school at around 3:30 p.m. and a fight ensued.

The witness, 19-year-old Kiara Velez, had just pulled up to the school to pick up her little brother when the incident began. Velez said that one of the males in the group punched another and that led to others among them joining in the fight.

According to Velez, the young male who threw the first punch then went on to pull out a gun and fire off two or three shots.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that police scanner traffic indicated the shooter may have been a student at nearby Independence High School and that the shooting may have been the result of a drug transaction gone bad.

The identities of the victims have not yet been made public but it's known that the 14-year-old is in critical condition and is being treated at Nationwide Children's Hospital. The 20-year-old victim was reportedly shot in the foot and was taken to OhioHealth Grand Medical Center for treatment, where he was listed in stable condition.

A spokesperson for the Columbus school district told reporters that none of the students at the elementary school were wounded in the shooting. School officials reportedly sent the children back inside at dismissal time as the fight began and remained in level three lockdown for approximately one hour.
