There are ways to make Valentine's Day very romantic, and ways to turn all that into the opposite of wonderful. For some, such a day can even be Halloween-level horrific, not that they were going for this kind of theme in the first place.

If you've had dates that nearly got ruined, whether on Feb. 14 or some other days of the year, see if they can surpass any of the following five testimonies.

A Funeral and a Fastfood Joint Date

A Gawker contributor going by the alias Candied Violet shared an experience that was so bizarre and nightmarish that the site named her personal story as the most horrific among them all. It involved a funeral of her ex-boyfriend's mom on Valentine's day, with the nightgown-clad deceased encased in what was pretty much just a cardboard box and essentially no make up to cover autopsy scars.

"The sickly, gaunt, white-as-a-sheet, stiff-as-a-board drug-ridden corpse who was to be perpetually ready for a long night's slumber lying in a giant cardboard box was a ghoul incarnate," the contributor described.

And that's only just one aspect of the whole experience. By the way, her boyfriend had not uttered a "Thank You" or an "I Love You" the entire time, despite her helping out at the wake and subsequent clean up, among others.

Three Crying Women and a Damaged Car

Mashable featured the account of one lady who, when she was 17, had split with her boyfriend via phone call on Valentine's Day and had to deal with a mother who had figured in a "knock-down, drag-out fight with her boyfriend" at the same time. Then there's also her stepmom who got verbally abused by her boss and even made to work on a Saturday. Her dad, trying to ease the situation, took her and her stepmother out for dinner. As he dropped them off, he figured in a crash that totaled their car. At least her dad didn't die, though.

An Ex and Three Thongs

College student Emily Tom, as told to USA Today, found out that the lingerie order she took via phone and personally gift-wrapped (she was working a shift on Valentine's at her mother's fashion shop) was for her ex-boyfriend's current girlfriend. He also personally picked the gift up. Awkward.

Two Exes and a Playgirl

"After secretly dating two guys - Dan and Joe - for a few months, I told Joe I

didn't want a relationship, so that I could get serious with Dan," reader Cristina told Cosmopolitan.

"On Valentine's Day, Dan took me out to dinner, and I almost choked on my drink when our waiter arrived. It was Joe! To make matters worse, Dan ordered a dish with béchamel sauce, which he loved."

"He gushed to the waiter, a.k.a. my ex, 'If she could cook like this I'd marry her,'" she said.

Food Poisoning, Anyone?

Another story shared on Mashable involved a date at a Mexican place on Valentine's that ended with diarrhea for both the guy and gal the rest of the evening. He found it romantic, nevertheless.
