There are rumors that HBO is poised to launch its own streaming service soon. The network recently doubled up its list of original content, which may be a move to compete with Netflix.

According to Business Insider, plans on how HBO is to move forward and get ahead of the competition were reportedly discussed during Time Warner company's fourth quarter earnings call. These included strategies similar to Netflix. Present at the meeting were HBO chief executive Richard Plepler and TW chairman and CEO Jeff Bewkes.

In addition to aiming for an expanded global reach, some of the points discussed were a target 50 percent boost in production throughout the current year. In December 2015, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos announced that the company is bent on increasing its original offerings by 100 percent in 2016.

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos announced in December 2015 that it is planning to double its original series list in the following year. Netflix has also been growing its international presence aggressively in the past few months, becoming available in all major markets, except China. Sarandos also said that original content is strategic because Netflix can globally distribute content without licensing issues. The programming can also become available to a larger fan base, drawing more fans and income.

HBO recently showed that its subscriber count for its HBO Now service was at 800,000, per Seeking Alpha. The number is decent, but below the expectations of analysts. Experts predicted that HBO Now would garner at least one million subscribers and even higher interest.

Plepler said that they are only getting started and in due time, the service is set to grow as it also expands its reach towards a global audience. HBO Now has been running for only 10 months and the network also has a number of hit original series like “Game of Thrones” and “Veep” that will certainly draw more subscribers soon. The network is regularly curating new content and will add Jon Stewart and Bill Simmons in 2016, specifically for its streaming audiences.

HBO has a long way to go, but it should not be underestimated, considering its reputation and longevity in the business. The increase is expected to be gradual, but certain. Although it may not elevate yet to the same levels as Netflix, HBO currently does not expect to move at such a pace, although it obviously intends to use the same approaches that made the online streaming site widely successful.

More updates and details on HBO Now and Netflix are expected in the coming months.
