Nintendo officially announced that the company's next generation console after the Wii U will launch globally in March 2017. Here are the details, as well as what we know about the "Nintendo NX" so far.

NX Launching March 2017

Still codenamed the Nintendo "NX," the popular Japanese gaming company announced the release date of the next generation console in its official financial briefing that it released on Wednesday.

"For our dedicated video game platform business, Nintendo is currently developing a gaming platform codenamed 'NX' with a brand-new concept," the company stated in its earnings release. "NX will be launched in March 2017 globally."

For those hoping to get a preview of the Nintendo NX during this June's Electronic Entertainment Expo, there's some bad news via Ars Technica: Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima said in the company's earnings call that the next generation system will not be appearing at this year's E3.

Release Dates for Top Wii U, NX Games

Along with confirming the release date of the Nintendo NX, or whatever the console could be named when it launches, Nintendo's financial statement also clarified release dates of some of its most anticipated upcoming games.

First of all, "Pokémon Sun" and "Pokémon Moon" will indeed be released on the Wii U in late 2016, the company reiterated.

But the highly anticipated "Legend of Zelda" has been delayed again, Nintendo revealed, and will launch on both the Wii U and the Nintendo NX in 2017. It should, however, be making an appearance at E3 this year.

What's Coming in the NX?

As for details on the Nintendo NX, the company still hasn't announced or leaked anything very concrete.

The NX represents the "next step" in Nintendos "device strategy," and will include a mobile unit that will work with the console as well as in a stand-alone capacity, according to anonymous sources in a Wall Street Journal report.

And it's expected that the NX will out-power the PS4 and Xbox One with an AMD chipset, which will probably mean the next generation console will also feature a price hike from its unpopular Wii U.

Beyond that, we'll have to wait until E3 to find out more details on the Nintendo NX, if the company is even willing to spill any nearly a year from launch.
