The Phoenix Police Department is investigating what has turned out to be a very disturbing incident involving a dead woman, 35 sick animals, and a swarm of insects. Lola Mae Stout was found dead in the back of a van her two sons were driving.

Her two son, Alan and Gregory Stout, have already been charged with one count each of vulnerable adult abuse causing death. Along with their father Alva, 79, the two sons were also charged with 35 counts of animal abuse after EMTs found a scene that looked straight out of a horror film.

"We got on scene and it's not uncommon for our EMTs to respond to hoarding cases in a home. What made this so different was the fact that it was a van filled with dozens and dozens of animals, people, feces, debris, cockroaches, spiders, just something we haven't seen to that scope in a very very long time," said Bretta Nelson of the Humane Society.

Of those animals, all 22 of the cats and three of the twelve dogs had to be put down immediately. Authorities said that the surviving animals do not have much of a chance of surviving. The animals were suffering from various infections and many were infested with bugs.

"The cats were very emaciated, very dirty ... hard to know when they had their last sip of water. They were panting, they were in heat stress, matted, emaciated," observed Nelson.

It is still uncertain how Lola Stout died. The two sons and her husband all gave conflicting accounts of what happened to their mother, and authorities say that they are still investigating the events surrounding her death.

"Court documents show her husband, Alva Stout, and sons Alan and Gregory Stout, gave conflicting statements about her death. One of them says the woman was alive when they filled up on gas in Quartzite. Her son Alan Stout says she collapsed in Quartzite but they put her in the van anyway and drove to Phoenix. That's about 120 miles," reports myfoxphoenix.com.

Mrs. Stout did have an extensive previous medical history, including multiple prior strokes, high blood pressure, goiter, and schizophrenia. All three of her family members are still being questioned but have not received any harsher charges in the case yet.
