The Miami Dolphins safety Don Jones was fined by the organization and has been suspended from team activities after he posted tweets about Michael Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL.

During ESPN's televised coverage of Saturday night's draft, Jones, 23, tweeted "OMG" and "horrible" while Sam was shown kissing his boyfriend in celebration of being picked up by the St. Louis Rams, according to the Washington Post.

Dolphins Coach Joe Philbin expressed his disdain for Jones' tweets to the Miami Herald in a statement.

"We were disappointed to read Don's tweets during the NFL draft," Philbin said. "They were inappropriate and unacceptable, and we regret the negative impact these comments had on such an important weekend for the NFL. We met with Don about respect, discrimination and judgment. These comments are not consistent with the values and standards of our program. We will continue to emphasize and educate our players that these statements will not be tolerated."

Jones' suspension will be lifted after he completes sensitivity training and both tweets have been deleted from his Twitter account, the Post reported. He has since apologized for his comments in a statement released by the team.

"I want to apologize to Michael Sam for the inappropriate comments that I made last night on social media," Jones said. "I take full responsibility for them and I regret that these tweets took away from his draft moment. I remember last year when I was drafted in the seventh round and all of the emotions and happiness I felt when I received the call that gave me an opportunity to play for the NFL team and I wish him all the best in his NFL career."

He added, "I sincerely apologize to Mr. Ross (Dolphins owner Stephen Ross), my teammates, coaches, staff and fans for these tweets. I am committed to represent the values of the Miami Dolphins organization and appreciate the opportunity I have been given to do so going forward."

The Dolphins organization has been no stranger to controversy and scandal. As recently as last year, the team made headlines nationwide regarding allegations of in-house bullying among players. The NFL's investigation into the allegations revealed a pattern of harassment and a hostile work environment.
