Nintendo 3DS Hacking Challenge for $20,000 Bounty

HackerOne posted on their blog that Nintendo is offering up to $20,000 prize for those who would be able to find security vulnerabilities in their Nintendo 3DS handheld. Nintendo specifically notes that they will focus on piracy, cheating and preventing sensitive content from being accessed by minors.

In order to be considered, Nintendo 3DS hackers must have formidable skills to deliver information where their security could be lacking. The particular Nintendo 3Ds system vulnerabilities they want to know more about includes ARM11 kernel takeover, ARM9 kernel and userland takeover and privilege escalation on ARM11 userland.

Nintendo 3DS Hacking Challenge to Add Security for Nintendo Switch?

The Nintendo 3DS was first released in early 2011 and while it may be considered a little outdated, it would seem like Nintendo is gathering information to add more security for their newest console, Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch is set to be released in the first quarter of next year, March 2017.

According to PC Mag, the Nintendo 3DS hacking challenge was rolled out by the Japanese company as a test ground for when they do it again for the Nintendo Switch. Security and safety is always a pressing issue especially since the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch is consoles aimed for children and teens so it makes sense for the gaming company to test out and stamp out the vulnerabilities.
