There is a lot of films that talk about the story of men being romantically involved with men. The Latin American film industry is not an exception to this kind of plot. Just like other films, each LGBTQ film in Latin America is created to showcase complications on homophobia and masculinity. However, stories of women falling in love with other women are still in the process of growth for the industry, says an article.

In celebration of Lesbian Visibility Day, here are some films that showcase lesbian-centered stories that made both Latin American and the United States big screens.

Mosquita y Mari

Mosquita y Mari is directed by Aurora Guerrero. It was produced in 2012 in the United States. It made use of incredible camera angles and soundtracks. The film tells the story of two young Latinas Mari and Yolanda who developed feelings for each other despite the constraints brought by their family traditions.

It is a story of two adolescents' friendship and rebellion that led to self-discovery. The dominant message of the film is unity and positivity, where decisions of people are not influenced or manipulated by others.

Signature Move

Signature Move is produced in 2017 in the United States under the leadership of Jennifer Reeder.

The movie tells the story of a Pakistani Muslim lawyer named Zaynab, who is played by Fawzia Mirza. Zaynab gets inspired by Lucha Libre and falls in love with Alma, a Mexican-American woman. Due to Zaynab's new passion, her mother was even more challenge to find her a husband.

It is a multicultural movie that revolves around the story of cultural differences, relationships, and a mother-daughter dynamic.

As Boas Maneiras

This is a film that was produced in 2017. Marco Dutra and Juliana Rojas directed it.

Boas Maneiras is a Brazilian werewolf horror movie and tells the story of Clara, a nurse from São Paulo, who accepts a job offer as a nanny for a pregnant woman. Clara later noticed that the woman was having weird cravings for red meat. Also, the woman was sleepwalking at night. Clara was predicting the oddness of the woman's pregnancy.

The Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four was produced in 2016 in the United States of America. Deborah Esquenazi directed it.

The film is about the story of four Latina lesbians named Anna Vasquez, Cassandra Rivera, Elizabeth Ramirez, and Kristie Mayhugh. The four were under trial and was convicted in 1994 for assaulting two young girls. The court case showed homophobic prejudice. Also, it showed the widespread Satanic Panic in the country during that time. The film is an incredible real-life crime story that tells the story about the trial of the 'San Antonia Four.' It tells about their continuing search for liberation.
