Florida's overall coronavirus positivity rate reached at 19.6 percent on Sunday, according to a data obtained from the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center.

This was the same day that the Florida Department of Health announced that the state has recorded over 15,000 new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections in just a single day.

In the last two weeks, the state's daily coronavirus positivity rate has ranged between 10.3 percent and 19.3 percent.

Positivity rate is the percentage of people who test positive for the virus of those overall who have been tested. Health experts expressed concern about the rising positivity rates as this indicates how fast the virus spreads across the state.

The state of Florida remains to have the highest number of COVID-19 infections in the country. At least 15,299 new coronavirus cases were recorded on Sunday. The record-setting number was based from the tests conducted on Saturday.

Despite this report of new infections, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has yet to implement the statewide mandatory use of face masks.

Last week, DeSantis even claimed that the state has stabilized the number of COVID-19 infections, according to CNN News. He also said they will hold the next phase of the state's reopening by getting the COVID-19 test positivity rate down.

Meanwhile, Rep. Donna Shalala said places in the state like Miami are getting closer to shutting down for the second time due to the spike in infections. She said this is an American tragedy and it is getting out of control in Florida because DeSantis would not tell everyone to wear a mask.

Meanwhile, the United States remained to have the highest number of infections across the globe. It has recorded more than 3.2 million cases with over 135,000 deaths, according to the data obtained from Johns Hopkins University.

In the previous weeks, the Johns Hopkins University was seeing higher rates in 33 states and flat for 14 states. The good news was that the number of coronavirus infections in the states of Delaware, Maine, and New Jersey have been declining.

The increase of COVID-19 infections in the 33 states was linked to the travel activities of people. It was found that more people traveled during the July 4 weekend compared to the Memorial Day weekend.

Experts noted that mobility allows the virus to spread faster. The analysis of mobility was released by Cuebiq, one of the private companies used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to track general movement in the U.S., which could help officials determine where the next coronavirus cluster could occur.

Health officials have already released travel warnings and guidance. They urged the public to skip traveling for the meantime, especially those who may be not feeling well as they may carry the virus.

However, it seems that the travel warnings and guidance were not taken seriously, most especially by some partygoers in Michigan.

Several people tested positive for COVID-19 after attending a lake party in Rapid City over the Fourth of July holiday. This was confirmed by the Health Department of Northwest Michigan last Friday.
