The global pandemic has led to a worldwide economic fallout, most especially in Latin America's second-largest economy, Mexico. In spite of that, some businessmen managed to retain their billionaire status amid the pandemic.

The global pandemic has also affected the world's richest persons. Some businessmen and elites lost their status as billionaires.

Even though some of the Mexican billionaires enjoyed the first two quarters because of soaring shares, there also some well-known personalities who did not make it.

According to Forbes, there are just around 12 Mexican billionaires who landed on the 2020 ranking of the world's billionaires.

The fortune of Mexico's billionaires has shrunk to a combined $103 billion. The amount is 25 percent less than the $133 billion combined fortune of Mexican billionaires last year.

Some of the Mexican magnates who lost their billionaire status are the following:

  • Emilio Azcarrago Jean, who inherited control of Mexico's largest television company, Televisa.
  • David Penaloza Alanis, the CEO of listed infrastructure firm Pinfra, which his father founded in 1969.
  • Fernando Chico Pardo, whose largest asset is airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste.
  • Jose and Francisco Jose Calderon Rojas, shareholders of Coca-Cola bottler and convenience store company FEMSA, also fell out of the rankings.

These are just the 12 Mexicans who maintained their billionaire status. According to Forbes, these numbers are fewer compared to last year. There are many factors why Forbes did not include some names on the list.

The calculated net worth and fortunes are based on March 18, 2020. At that time, the Mexican peso was at its weakest point compared to the U.S. dollar. In fact, the peso has fallen to 25 percent in 2020 alone and the $1 trading is equivalent to only 42 pesos.

Even the richest Mexican, Carlos Slim, is affected by the pandemic. Though he leads the rank, he fell short of $12 billion, or nearly 19% compared last year. However, with his net worth amounting to $52.1 billion, this is still more than every other Mexican billionaire combined
