Democrat Raphael Warnock was projected to have defeated Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler in their Senate race in Georgia. His win puts Democrats within reach of the Senate majority.

According to The Hill report, several news outlets have already called the race for Warnock before 2 a.m. on Wednesday.

Warnock addressed his supporters in a virtual speech and said that they proved that anything is possible with hope, hard work, and "people by our side."

"So Georgia, I am honored by the faith that you have shown in me and I promise you this tonight: I am going to the Senate to work for all of Georgia, no matter who you cast your vote for in this election," Warnock added.

Warnock is the Ebenezer Baptist Church pastor in Atlanta and is set to be the first African American to represent Georgia in the Senate.

On the other hand, Loeffler has yet to concede, according to an NPR report. She said it is worth it for this election "to last into tomorrow," adding that she will ensure that every vote is counted.

The wealthy businesswoman was appointed to the Senate by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp in late 2019 to fill the seat vacated by Johnny Isakson's resignation.

The Georgia's Senate Race

Neither Loeffler nor Warnock has reached the 50 percent threshold needed to win the general election in November, which sends the race into a runoff.

Warnock garnered approximately 33 percent of the vote at that time, while Loeffler counted in around 26 percent of the votes. The Real Clear Politics polling average showed Warnock leading by just 1.8 percentage points on the Monday before the runoff.

The Democratic pastor criticized Loeffler over her initial lack of support for the $2,000 stimulus checks for Congress' coronavirus relief package in the campaign's final weeks.

Last month, Warnock tweeted saying, billionaire Loeffler thinks $600 will cover your rent, groceries, and hospital bills. Eventually, Loeffler came to support a higher price cap for the stimulus checks after President Donald Trump called for a $2,000 stimulus checks.

Ossoff-Perdue Senate Race

Meanwhile, the runoff between Jon Ossoff and David Perdue remained too close to call as key precincts continued to tally votes, according to WSB-TV 2 Atlanta news report.

Perdue's campaign released a statement regarding the race, saying that it is an exceptionally close election that will require time and transparency to ensure that the results are fair and accurate and "the voices of all Georgians are heard."

If Ossoff wins, Democrats would have full control of Congress, strengthening President-elect Joe Biden's standing as he prepares to take office on Jan. 20.

Warnock's win in Georgia symbolizes a massive shift happening in the state's politics and the rising number of diverse.

It also marks the end of about two decades in which Democrats have been blocked from statewide office, and it follows Biden's victory in November. According to an ABC 7 News report, it makes Biden the first Democrat presidential nominee to win the state since 1992.
