Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is accused of killing George Floyd last May by pressing his knee against the Black man's neck, listened during his trial at the Hennepin County District Court on Tuesday morning.

As the case moves forward, the third jury who will be serving the case has been chosen despite prosecutors asking the Minnesota Court of Appeals to halt Chauvin's trial.

The selection process ended after the third juror was seated. According to an ABC News report, the first batch of possible jurors was brought into the courtroom after 9 a.m. local time while prosecutors and attorneys for Derek Chauvin introduced themselves.

Hennepin County District Court Judge Peter Cahill said he plans to keep the jury selection process until the appellate court tells him to stop.

Jury Selection Process on Derek Chauvin's Case

A woman and two men have been chosen to serve on the jury of Derek Chauvin's trial. The first selected juror for the cast is a chemist in his 30s. The said juror was also a resident of Minneapolis and is engaged to be married.

The first juror said he has a generally favorable view of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, adding that he believes that all lives matter equally.

He also noted that he does not believe that the movement is necessary in the case. The man claimed that he had never watched the video showing Derek Chauvin kneeling on Floyd's neck before, according to an Insider report.

The second juror is a woman from northern Minnesota, who said she was excited to be part of the hearing as she was fascinated by the court process.

The woman noted that she had seen Chauvin's video that gave her a somewhat negative opinion on the defendant. However, she said it could be proven wrong when presented with complete evidence.

The second juror also supports the BLM movement, but she noted that companies turned it into a marketing ploy to get people to buy products. She said that she also felt the same way about the pro-cop countermovement.

The third juror was a financial auditor and had a somewhat negative belief of Derek Chauvin as he was involved in a death. But he noted that he would base his findings in the case only on the trial's evidence.

George Floyd's Death

As seen on a viral video shot by bystander Darnella Frazier, Floyd was pinned down by Derek Chauvin and was seen pressing his knee into the back of Floyd's neck while he was handcuffed, lying face down, New York Post reported.

Floyd can be heard telling the police at least a dozen times that he cannot breathe and asked Derek Chauvin to remove his knee off his neck. Even bystanders, including a grocery clerk, pleaded with the officers to let Floyd get up.

Medical officials reportedly spent an hour trying to revive George Floyd. However, he was pronounced dead at a local hospital at 9:25 p.m. Police called EMTs around 8:30 p.m.

Derek Chauvin is facing a second-degree unintentional murder charge and a manslaughter charge. He has pleaded not guilty to all these charges.

The former Minneapolis cop had faced 10 conduct complaints before over his 19 years in service. However, he had never faced any disciplinary action.
