Mexico City Rail Overpass Collapses

The tragic incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on the metro's Line 12, Sky News reported. The said overpass was built under the tenure of foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard when he was still the mayor of Mexico City.

In a video on Twitter posted by the SUUMA Voluntarios, a Mexican paramedic, a damaged railway overpass can be seen that split a train in two and left it hanging precariously on a road near Olivos station.

The sound of sirens could also be heard in the video. The video also showed a crowd of maskless people in the area. Mexican City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum rushed to the scene and said it seemed that the accident was caused by a "support beam" giving way.

The metro overpass that collapsed has been plagued with complaints and accusations of irregularities during its construction.

In a tweet, Sheinbaum noted that firefighters and public safety personnel were already at the scene of the accident working. Sheinbaum said that at least one car was trapped under the debris of the overpass that collapsed.

Emergency workers were also reported to search for survivors in the area of the incident. But the Mexico City mayor said the rescue had been temporarily suspended as the train was "very weak." However, she noted that a crane was already being transported to the area to stabilize the train carriages so rescuers could resume their work.

Pedestrian Bridge Collapse

This tragic accident in Mexico City follows the incident in April when a pedestrian bridge over a highway also collapsed.

Eminetra reported that the said incident happened on Apr. 22 in the suburbs of San Luis Potosí in Enramada, Mexico. Federal Highway 57 was reported to be blocked by the fallen bridge, La Voz De Michoacán reported.

There were no fatalities in the incident, but at least two semi-trucks were damaged. In a video posted by a Twitter user, a truck was crushed near the driver's seat where the footbridge that collapsed have landed. Authorities, including medics, can also be seen in the video as they respond to the scene.

Twitter Error

Meanwhile, Marcelo Ebrard tweeted his sympathies, describing that what happened was a "terrible tragedy."

"My solidarity is with the victims and their families," Ebrard noted.

Ebrard said the cause of the accident "must be investigated and responsibilities defined." The foreign minister added that he would include himself among the authorities who will contribute to whatever is deemed necessary in the incident.

Officially called Sistema de Transporte Colectivo, the Mexico City Metro is the second-largest metro system in North America, following the New York City Subway.
