Former Argentina Player Federico Martin Aramburu Shot Dead in Paris

Former Argentina player Federico Martin Aramburu was reportedly shot dead in Paris, France early Saturday.

The 42-year-old former rugby player was killed in a drive-by shooting in Paris, according to a BBC News report.

A French newspaper said that he had been involved in an early-morning argument in a bar with a group of people, who later returned in a car and shot him.

The Paris prosecutor's office launched an investigation, with police reportedly looking for three suspects.

An altercation reportedly broke out between four individuals including Aramburu. He was accompanied by a friend before they separated ways, according to a L'equipe News report.

The two men finally returned by car in front of the bar in question and shot the former Argentina rugby player with a firearm several times.

The prosecutor's office did not give more details regarding Aramburu's death. However, they confirmed that shots were fired during the incident and that he died in the street.

Aramburu reportedly lived in France and had planned to travel to Argentina next week.

Aramburu made 22 international appearances for Argentina during his career, playing for Biarritz, Perpignan, and Dax in the French league, according to a Sky Sports News report.

The former rugby player also played for Glasgow Warriors in 2010-11 in the Pro12 league competition.

In 2005 and 2006, he won the French championship twice with Biarritz and was part of the Argentina team that finished third at the 2007 World Cup.

He had an average per match of 5.14, with a total of 144 points scored.

Aramburu also had 28 matches and 28 tries scored, according to a World Rugby Stats.

He also had two conversions, without any penalties, drop goals, yellow cards, or red cards.

Gun Violence in France

In 2021, France has been alarmed over recent weeks by a series of young people in gang violence in the Paris region during the school holidays.

Experts noted that the role of social media and the economic effects of the COVID-19 crisis contribute to the phenomenon.

The most widely reported killing in 2021 was of Aymane, who was a 15-year-old shot in the troubled Seine-Saint-Denis suburbs outside Paris.

He was the third teenager in less than a week to have died in gang violence in the Paris suburbs, with the alleged suspect being two brothers aged 17 and 27, according to France 24 News report.

The brothers were charged in March 2021.

Yazid Kherfi, a former robber who turned away from crime and has worked in youth crime prevention since 2012, said that it is not surprising that the most serious problems have taken place during the school holidays.

He added that during this time, people have to go without the forms of social support that they usually rely on, such as sports clubs and youth centers.

Gang warfare among young people in France is on the rise, with the interior ministry statistics showing that France recorded some 357 incidents in 2020 as compared to 288 in the previous year.
