President Joe Biden will announce a new rule in connection to the rising problem of the United States with ghost guns.

The move was confirmed by six people familiar with the matter to Associated Press on Sunday, claiming that the president is set to announce the measure on Monday.

AP noted that the measure from the Biden administration came as the ghost guns or privately made firearms without a serial number are increasingly cropping the crime scenes in the United States.

According to NBC News, many cities across the U.S. have reported increasing numbers of weapons. Ghost guns do not possess serial numbers, a feature that allows law enforcement to track guns and enforce background checks.

AP mentioned that the new rule would change the current definition of a firearm under the federal law to include unfinished parts, like the frame of the hadngun.

NBC News noted that the new rules to be announced by Biden will also include new steps to make it harder for people to acquire ghost guns.

Chuck Schumer Urged Pres. Joe Biden to Speed Up Ghost Gun Rule Approval

On Sunday, New York Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called on the Biden administration to act faster in approving the ghost gun rule, per The Daily Mail.

"It's high time for a ghost gun exorcism before the proliferation peaks and before more people get hurt - or worse," Schumer underscored.

Schumer added that waiting for the proposed federal rules should not be done, contending that ghost guns are easy to build, hard to trace, and too dangerous to ignore.

AP shared that the ghost gun rule has been placed under the federal regulatory process for a year. In its proposed rule released May last year, manufacturers and dealers who sell ghost gun parts will be licensed by the federal government. Furthermore, federally licensed firearms dealers will be required to add a serial number to any guns they plan to sell without a serial number.

According to statistics from the Justice Department, nearly 24,000 ghost guns were recovered at crime scenes by law enforcement from 2016 to 2020.

According to reports, The New York Police Department alone claimed that at least 131 firearms without serial numbers were confiscated by their officers since January.

Biden to Nominate New ATF Director

On Monday, President Joe Biden is also expected to nominate a new director for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

The Daily Mail reported that Joe Biden and his administration are aiming for former U.S. Attorney Steve Dettelbach from Ohio, to oversee the ATF.

Reports mentioned that Dettelbach served the government under the Obama administration.

Dettelbach's nomination came after the White House withdrew its last nominee, David Chipman, for the post, following a unanimous opposition from the Republicans.

It can be recalled that both Republican and Democratic administrations failed to get nominees for the ATF position through the politically fraught process. Only one nominee, U.S. Attorney B. Todd Jones, has been confirmed and made it through the senate after a six-month struggle.
