The San Francisco 49ers shipped receiver A.J. Jenkins to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for another receiver, Jon Baldwin, in a one-to-one trade on Monday.

The wide receivers are both former first round picks that have had disappointing starts to their careers; the teams hope that a change of scenery could make a difference since the players had such high potential when they were drafted.

Baldwin was the Chiefs' first round choice in 2011 and his career has been anything but stable thus far. He broke his thumb in a fight during his rookie campaign and has yet to find his stride. He dropped what was a wide open pass on Friday night.

Jenkins was drafted more recently -- 30th overall last year -- and only appeared in three games. He had a catch in the preseason opener but his highlight reel was canceled out by his fumble, which could have had an effect on the team's decision to trade him.

It marks the second time in recent history that the two teams made news with a transaction; the 49ers traded Alex Smith to the Chiefs earlier in the offseason in exchange for draft picks.

With just a couple weeks before the official NFL season begins, players will be making their last effort to make the cut before teams trim down to the 53-man roster. The season will be opening up with a Thursday night primetime special Sept. 5 between the Baltimore Ravens and the Denver Broncos in Denver.
