A Chicago police officer was shot and seriously wounded on Sunday afternoon during a short gunfire exchange in the Englewood neighborhood.

Chicago Tribune reported that the unidentified male officer and a male offender were both wounded in the area, according to authorities.

The wounded officer was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, and is in serious but stable condition.

Police Superintendent David Brown said that the offender got out of the car and started firing at the officers.

Brown added that the Chicago police officer was struck twice, once in the arm, and one in the torso. Meanwhile, the offender was struck as well, with the suspect in critical condition.

The superintendent said he did not know how many times the offender was shot while police were still holding off releasing details until the video of the incident was reviewed.

Brown told reporters the offenders are "brazen in harming officers."

Chicago Sun-Times reported that authorities have scanned the area surrounding the shooting, with at least 18 shell casing markers were placed near a silver Toyota sedan.

Chicago Police Force Shot

In a separate incident, Chicago police noted that 19-year-old Tarrion Johnson was arrested Thursday after he opened fire on an officer with the U.S. Marshals Service's fugitive apprehension team with his federal police dog, according to a Fox News report.

The unit was serving the Chicago man with an arrest warrant for a previously attempted murder charge.

The marshal brought the wounded K-9 to a veterinary clinic right after the shooting, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

The officer then realized that he was shot in the hand but refused to be taken to a hospital.

The U.S. Marshals Service noted that the police dog was in the intensive care unit of an emergency veterinary hospital.

Johnson is facing charges of attempted murder, attempted robbery with a firearm, aggravated cruelty to animals, and injury to a police animal.

Another Englewood District officer was shot and seriously wounded while trying to make a traffic stop in the 6100 block of South Paulina Street.

Police had internally determined a suspect last week. However, no arrests have been reported.

Brown said that now is a good time to say thank you when one sees an officer, adding that they need encouragement right now.

Gun Violence

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot posted a statement on Twitter calling on the U.S. Senate to take action to end access to illegal guns.

Lightfoot asked how many officers and residents must be subjected to gun violence before lawmakers start to act.

Asia Butler, co-founder, and CEO of the Resident Association of Greater Englewood noted that new efforts are underway that would help bridge the gap between the police and the community and increase visibility.

However, she acknowledged that it is difficult to reach people "committing these types of crimes."

Police said that officers involved in the shooting will be on administrative duties for 230 days as the Civilian Office of Police Accountability investigates.
