Texas police had shot and killed a man after he walked into a facility where a youth summer camp was being held.

According to Fox News, Duncanville police said no children, staff, or police officers were harmed during the incident inside the Duncanville Fieldhouse.

Officers responded to reports that a man with a gun was inside the building, where around 150 children were attending a youth summer camp. Duncanville Police Officer Michelle Arias told reporters that officers located a subject armed with a gun and engaged the subject.

Arias added that the man was struck, and officers provided first aid. He was then transported to the hospital but was later pronounced dead. According to NBCDFW, the police and the gunman exchanged gunfire.

Duncanville Assistant Chief of Police Matthew Stogner said the gunman entered the lobby and had a discussion with a staff member.

Stogner noted that the gunman fired the first shot that was heard in the building. Police have not yet revealed any information about the man or why he entered the building.

A car in the parking lot was surrounded by crime scene tape Monday morning and was being investigated. But it was not clear if the vehicle belonged to the gunman.

Gunman Inside a Texas Youth Summer Camp

Duncanville Mayor Barry Gordon commented on the incident, saying their officers did not hesitate and did what they were trained to do and saved lives.

The summer camp for four to 14-year-olds has an average attendance of more than 250 campers and staff, according to Duncanville Police Department. ABC News reported that a camp counselor confronted the suspected gunman in the lobby of the indoor sports and fitness center.

Stogner noted that staff members moved the kids to a safe area and locked the doors upon hearing the gunshots in the lobby, which prevented the suspected gunman from getting inside. He added that the gunman fired one round outside the classroom with children after he was unable to get in. No one was injured.

Police said the youth summer camp followed lockdown procedures, adding that the clear-headed actions of the staff and the quick response time of law enforcement resulted in no additional injuries.

NBC News reported that the suspect moved to the main gym, where there were still children present. However, no shots were fired until the officers arrived and engaged in the firefight that killed the suspect.

Camp counselor Naomi Rodgers told KXAS she was in the classroom filled with children ages four to six when it became a focus of the suspect. Stogner noted that the gunman was unknown to Duncanville police.
