One of the Las Vegas Review-Journal's most respected investigative journalists has been stabbed to death outside his home in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to police, Jeff German, 69, had a fight with another person and was stabbed at around 10:30 a.m. Saturday, in broad daylight.

A 911 call was placed following the stabbing, but when police arrived, they were too late as they found German already dead outside his house. According to the New York Post, police found his body on the side of his home located at the 7200 block of Bronze Circle.

Las Vegas Police Already Have Leads and Are Hunting the Suspect

According to police reports, the confrontation between the journalist and the suspect occurred a day before his body was found.

In a statement, Captain Dori Koren of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) said they do have some leads and already pursuing the suspect but admitted that the suspect was "outstanding."

The captain noted that the LVMPD had already enacted its major case protocol Saturday for the homicide investigation into the investigative reporter's death. It means the Las Vegas police will treat this case with the utmost urgency to apprehend the suspect faster and maximize their investigative efforts.

Koren believed that the stabbing incident was isolated and there was no threat to the public. Meanwhile, Clark County spokesman Dan Kulin said the county coroner's office has already determined that

Jeff German's cause of death was "from multiple sharp force injuries." His death has already been ruled a homicide.

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman noted that she was shocked to learn of the reporter's death, adding that "this was a senseless act of violence." She said they will be "closely following the police investigation."

Jeff German Made a Lot of Enemies as an Investigative Journalist

Las Vegas Review-Journal Executive Editor Glenn Cook also released a statement, saying that Jeff German's death has devastated the Review-Journal family.

He described the late reporter as the "gold standard of the news business," adding that it will be hard to imagine what the city will be like without German's "shining a bright light on dark places."

The editor further noted that German had not communicated any concerns about any danger to his life to newspaper leaders. He added that he was relieved that a suspect had already been identified.

German joined the Review-Journal in 2010 as a columnist and reporter. He covered courts, politics, labor, government, and organized crime.

He had been covering some big stories since the '90s, including the killing of Las Vegas mafia associate Herbert "Fat Herbie" Blitzstein in 1997. His colleagues describe him as a dedicated reporter.

In 2019, he exposed failures in city inspections on the deadly Alpine Motel Apartments fire. He also reported about the Clark County's public administrator's office bullying, hostility, and mismanagement and breaking the news of City Councilwoman Michele Fiore's campaign finances being under FBI scrutiny, as well as reporting on the sexual harassment claims which plagued the Clark County coroner's office.

Perhaps the biggest news he covered was the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting incident, wherein a shooter fired into a crowded outdoor concert from his room in Mandalay Bay. It was considered the worst mass shooting in modern American history, as 60 people were killed.

It was German who pointed out that it had been years since Las Vegas Strip casinos, including Mandalay Bay, had presented emergency response plans in events such as these.

He documented the lack of oversight, forcing authorities to admit they had no standards to judge whether plans submitted by the casinos were even workable. It led to the state revamping laws and strengthening requirements for the casinos to operate.
