SNAP benefits recipients can expect an extra allotment for January 2023 after the federal government approved the additional funds for SNAP benefits in January 2023.

The SNAP benefits payments for January 2023 should include the 12.5% cost-of-living adjustment rate approved for the fiscal year 2023. The COLA will run through September 30, 2023, aiming to cushion the rising costs of food and other basic necessities.

The Department of Children and Family Services announced that Electronic Benefit Transfer cardholders should see the benefits on January 8, 2023, Sunday.

The agency also noted that SNAP recipients who are not yet on the maximum benefit allotment threshold will be given the supplement for them to reach the maximum.

Meanwhile, households who are already at the maximum benefit allotment will receive a supplemental allotment of $95.

DCFS also address the people who have applied for SNAP benefits but still have to receive their approval.

The agency said that SNAP benefits applicants "will receive the supplemental allotment" based on their household size on a "rolling weekly basis."

DCFS noted that the maximum allotment as of October 1, 2022 is worth $281 as compared to the previous maximum allotment worth $250 for a household size of 1.

There will be an extra $211 for each additional member of the household.

Several states will be issuing extra SNAP benefits allotments in January 2023, including California, Colorado, Washington, D.C., Louisiana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, and Oklahoma, among others.

In California, the extra allotments will be deposited into California residents' CalFresh accounts on either February 4 or February 11.

Around 2,888,531 beneficiaries will receive the extra SNAP benefits in California for January 2023.

In Oregon, SNAP benefits recipients will continue to receive the increased emergency food benefits in January.

However, the emergency benefits are expected to end once the federal public health emergency stops.

Around 421,000 SNAP households in Oregon will receive more than $71 million in extra food benefits on top of their regular SNAP benefits.

Emergency allotments will be issued on January 11, 2023 while households who did not receive benefits in the first monthly issuance will receive theirs on January 31, 2023 or February 2, 2023.

SNAP benefits payments schedule varies depending on the states and territories across the United States.

Most states impose staggered payment schedules based on the recipients' SNAP case numbers, last names, or Social Security numbers.

SNAP Benefits Payments

The food stamp payments can be used to procure SNAP-eligible food items such as fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, bread, cereals, snack foods, and non-alcoholic beverages.

There are items beneficiaries are not allowed to buy using SNAP benefits, such as alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, vitamins, medicines, pet foods, and cosmetic products, among others.

Beneficiaries cannot buy hot meals using their SNAP benefits in most states. However, California allows it through the SNAP Restaurant Meals Program.

Other states participating in the same program are Alaska, Illinois, Maryland, Virginia, Rhode Island, and Michigan.
