Over the past few months, Donald Trump has launched a series of racist attacks against the woman who once served as his own Transportation Secretary, Elaine Chao, the wife of Mitch McConnell. The former president had been giving her demeaning names, but she has had enough.

Trump's attacks were not just directed toward her, but also her husband, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. He had called her "Coco Chow" as a way to demean her, as well as called her Mitch McConnell's "China-loving wife" to accuse her of ties with the Chinese Communist government.

Now, Chao is speaking out and talking to Politico. In a statement, she told the outlet about the racism she had experienced, saying, "When I was young, some people deliberately misspelled or mispronounced my name. Asian Americans have worked hard to change that experience for the next generation."

She added that Trump does now seem to understand the challenge that Asian Americans are facing, and added that it "says a whole lot more about him than it will ever say about Asian Americans."

Chao mostly keeps out of the political spotlight, even though she is married to the U.S. Senate's highest-ranking Republican. This makes her statement a rarity, especially as she is making this against her former boss.

The statement also came when high-profile shootings of Asian Americans are at an all-time high, and Trump's anti-Asian rhetoric certainly does not help.

Elaine Chow Blasted Media for Repeating Donald Trump's Anti-Asian Racism

Donald Trump's attacks on the Republican power couple are nothing new, as he usually uses Chao to lambast McConnell over actions he does not like.

This includes a racist Truth Social post which Chao first pushed back on in late December. She appeared on "CNN This Morning" and told host Kaitlan Collins, "I think it's very helpful if the media does not repeat that racist tweet."

She clarified that if any other racist word, such as the N-word, were used, the media would not repeat it. However, she blasted news networks for continuously repeating Trump's racist taunting.

According to The Hill, that Truth Social post came after McConnell voted in favor of the $1.7 trillion omnibus package to fund the government into 2023. Aside from his racist remarks about his wife, Trump also accused the Kentucky senator of surrendering to the "Marxist Democrats."

Republicans Mostly Silent About Donald Trump's Anti-Asian Rhetoric

Chao's latest pushback against Trump is viewed by many as one of the latest key Republican pushbacks against the former president who is viewed by many as the current leader of the Republican Party.

However, aside from her husband, it was only Chao who was pushing back against Trump's anti-Asian rhetoric, as MSNBC pointed out. Former Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney seemed to be the only Republican backing Chao and McConnel, calling Trump's words "despicable" racism.

Florida Senator Rick Scott downplayed Trump's rhetoric against Chao, saying Trump simply "likes to give people nicknames."
