The FBI has searched the University of Delaware as part of its probe into the possible mishandling of President Joe Biden's classified documents.

The Associated Press confirmed the CNN report about the search at the university through a source who spoke on condition of anonymity. CNN reported that investigators retrieved materials from two searches that were carried out in two university locations on two separate days.

However, a source familiar with the matter told the outlet that no materials appeared to have classified markings, but the FBI is now reviewing them. Biden donated his records from his 36 years of service in the Senate to the university in 2011.

The University of Delaware is the president's alma mater. The university noted that the documents arrived on June 6, 2012, releasing photos of the numbered boxes being unloaded at the university.

The records were to remain sealed until two years after he retires from public life as part of the condition of Biden's gift. The presidential records act would not cover the Senate records of Biden. However, prohibitions on mishandling classified information will still apply.

The University of Delaware has reportedly referred questions regarding the matter to the Department of Justice. Aside from Biden's classified documents, the Justice Department is also investigating the handling and retention of former President Donald Trump's around 300 classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago residence.

Joe Biden Classified Documents

According to BBC News, the first batch of classified documents from Joe Biden's University of Pennsylvania office was discovered days before the midterm elections.

Biden's team insisted that the president has cooperated fully with the Justice Department. Biden also previously said he has "no regrets" about not disclosing the discovery of some classified files to the public before the November midterm elections.

The president's lawyers said a second batch of classified documents was found in the garage at his Wilmington home last December. Another document was discovered in a storage space at the house on January 12.

Some of the classified documents were from his time as a senator, while others were from his years as vice president. Biden's lawyer, Bob Bauer, said some "personally handwritten notes" and "surrounding materials" were also taken away.

Bauer added that the president offered access to his home to allow Justice Department to search the premises for possible vice-presidential records and classified material.

Biden said his team immediately turned over the classified documents to the National Archives and the Justice Department after finding them.

Classified Documents Saga

Former Vice President Mike Pence has also been reported to have found a "small number of documents" with classified marking at his residence in Indiana. According to Pence's attorney, the materials were stored in boxes that were not in a secure area but were taped up and appeared to be unopened since they were packed.

The letter to National Archives noted that neither the former vice president nor his counsel looked into the contents of the documents, but they were moved to a locked safe. About a dozen documents were found in Pence's possession.

On the other hand, the FBI's search of Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate produced dozens of boxes and around 11,000 documents, with at least 100 classified documents. However, the former president denied any wrongdoing and claimed that he had "declassified" the documents taken with him.
