Florida flight delays have caused a bump in the trip of several travelers in the state after the Federal Aviation Administration announced that issues with air traffic control caused flight delays.

The agency noted in a statement on Monday that it temporarily suspended flights to and from parts of South Florida due to a radar issue, according to CNN.

The FAA added that the postponement lasted about an hour, with the Florida flight delays affecting the FAA's Miami and Jacksonville Air Route Traffic Control Centers.

The aviation agency also announced departure delays for flights leaving airports in Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Miami, Palm Beach, and Fort Myers.

Passengers were advised to check their travel providers if they were traveling in the said area.

Florida Flight Delays Cause

There are several causes why a flight could be delayed. It could be a machine issue, such as aircraft mechanical or maintenance issues, with the duration of the delayed flight varying from 15 minutes or more.

The weather is also one of the most frequent reasons behind flight delays is the weather, with the weather affecting the origin airport, during the flight, or at the destination of the airport, as detailed by iFly.

In the case of the recent Florida flight delays, air traffic was the main reason.

Air traffic can directly affect both arrivals, including departure time and flights.

Air and ground traffic can occur if a scheduled flight has been pushed back from the gate late. The next scheduled flight to arrive next at the gate could also be late.

Meanwhile, flights that have arrived at the scheduled time might have to "circle" around the airport area due to congestion.

Waiting for connecting passengers and crews can also be one of the reasons why flights are delayed.

Florida Flight Delays

The Bureau of Transportation Statics reported in 2022 that there were 1,042,056 delayed flights in the United States.

Miami Herald reported that four Florida airports were ranked as "worst" for flight delays. These airports were Orlando International Airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Tampa International Airport, and Miami International Airport.

Orlando International Airport has 28.24% of flights delayed, while Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport had 26.1% of flights delayed.

Tampa International Airport's flights delayed was at 25.48% while Miami International Airport's flights delayed were at 24.4%.

In January, the state's airports experienced a series of flight delays due to air traffic computer issues. The issue occurred at Miami Air Route Traffic Control Center and started causing delays at around 1 p.m., according to Miami International Airport's spokesperson, Greg Chin.

USA Today noted that Chin said Miami's hub carrier, American Airlines, has had more than 50 departures delayed due to an ERAM outage.

ERAM or En Route Automation Modernization system is a modern traffic system at the air traffic centers that manage en route traffic.

Orlando International Airport had 221 outbound flights delayed and 246 delays for inbound flights.
