Despite rampant rumors about the casting and release date of Season 2 of HBO's "True Detective," the developments are just as mysterious as the cases on the show -- especially after series creator Nic Pizzolatto seemingly shot down rumor after rumor about the characters and who will be portraying them.

Speculations have gotten wilder since TheWrap reported that the show will have a male lead and a female lead. There were even rumors that two women would be taking over in the main roles after Season 1's Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Pizzolatto mentioned in an interview this year that he was working with the idea of three leads. Jessica Chastain was rumoured to be among the top candidates, but she has denied this.

The latest rumor is that "True Detective" may focus on a male lead again. Another rumor is that Pizzolatto has already turned in the first script of the second season -- contradicting his claim this year, further confusing speculators. He also said he likely won't stay with "True Detective" for more than three seasons -- although this does not necessarily mean the end of the series.

Right now, the only confirmed details are those Pizzolatto has revealed about the three lead characters, the setting (California), and that he would like to focus on "bad men," "hard women" and the United States transportation system and its secret occult history. Those are Pizzolatto's words, but nothing is clear for what fans should expect in Season 2. Serials have used this strategy time and again to keep their fans in suspense so they watch the show.
