Necaxa: Eva Longoria’s Bold Mission Save a Mexican Soccer Icon

"Necaxa," a new bilingual docuseries executive produced by Eva Longoria, Ryan Reynolds, and Rob McElhenney, will premiere August 7 on FXX, Hulu, and Disney+ Latin America. The series takes viewers deep inside the turbulent world of Club Necaxa, one of Mexico's most historic but struggling soccer teams.

The docuseries will launch with two episodes at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FXX, followed by weekly releases, with episodes also streaming the next day on Hulu and internationally on Disney+.

Founded in 1923, Club Necaxa is a legendary institution in Mexican soccer. Known as Los Rayos (The Lightning), the team was once a dominant force, winning multiple national championships, including a golden era in the 1990s. However, in recent decades the club has faced financial instability, ownership changes, relocations, and years of fighting to remain relevant in Liga MX.

Despite the turbulence, Necaxa remains the beating heart of Aguascalientes, where loyal fans continue to dream of the club's return to glory.

Hollywood Meets Mexican Soccer

Eva Longoria, who became a co-owner of Club Necaxa in 2021, leads the series. The actress, producer, and activist, who has long championed Latino representation in Hollywood, now turns her attention to the world of soccer.

Joining Longoria are Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, whose previous soccer docuseries Welcome to Wrexham became an international sensation. Their success in reviving Wrexham AFC, a small Welsh soccer club, offers a proven formula, combining heart, humor, and the drama of sports, now applied to Necaxa's fight for a comeback.

What Necaxa Will Show

FX describes Necaxa as a gripping, bilingual series that offers unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to the team's battle to reclaim its legacy. The cameras capture everything: from locker room drama and career-defining injuries to ownership dilemmas and the relentless spirit of the fans.

The series highlights a pivotal moment for Necaxa as the club undergoes major changes, facing high expectations from both new owners and its devoted community. It's a story of resilience, hope, and whether lightning can strike again for this iconic Mexican team.

A Powerful Production Team

The series is executive produced by Eva Longoria, Cris Abrego, Rachelle Mendez, Nicholas Frenkel, Jackie Cohn, George Dewey, Rob McElhenney, Ryan Reynolds, Alex Fumero, and Diana E. Gonzales. Production companies include Hyphenate Media Group, Maximum Effort, More Better Productions, and 3 Arts Entertainment.

Necaxa continues the growing trend of sports docuseries that combine compelling human stories with the drama of the game, offering global audiences an intimate look at the soul of a soccer club. This time with Latino pride at its core.
