Although Florida became a state in 1845, the state's rapid development was only sparked once two railroad tycoons constructed lines down the Atlantic and Gulf coasts in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Tourist spending accounts for a sizable portion of Florida's GDP, thanks to the state's abundance of beaches, the concentration of large theme parks in and around Orlando, and cruise ship ports on both coasts. Florida's groves supply many of the nation's oranges, while the state's winter vegetable business extends the growing season.

Florida's status as a top retirement destination benefits because it is one of the few states that does not impose a personal income tax primarily funded by tourists' purchases.

The state has 1,197 miles of shoreline and 53,630 square miles of land. From Pensacola in the far northwest Panhandle to Key West at the extremity of the archipelago that spans south of Miami is a total land distance of 792 miles, with the highest natural elevation along the entire route being a ridge in the Panhandle at 345 feet. The highest point in any other state is higher.

The state is home to a significant network of state universities, community colleges, and its many major urban centers.

Florida State University and the University of Florida in Gainesville have been challenged in student body size by the University of Central Florida in Orlando, the University of South Florida in Tampa, the University of Central Florida in Orlando, and Florida International University in Miami. The University of Miami is one of the most prestigious private universities in the world.

Utah's name, "Deseret," comes from the followers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who fled religious persecution in the East in the middle of the 1800s and settled in this far western region, Utah.

Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona form an obtuse angle with the mountainous, high plateau and desert terrain of Utah, whose capital city, Salt Lake City, is home to the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere. The "Four Corners" region is the only place in the United States with such a configuration.

The mountains near Salt Lake City receive a lot of snow, making them ideal for skiing. The Sundance Film Festival, one of the best independent film festivals in the world, is held every January in Park City, making Utah a popular tourist destination.
