Embattled New York Republican Representative George Santos' lies have finally caught up to him as he has now been charged by the Department of Justice.

So far, what those charges are exactly is still unclear, as sources with knowledge of the matter told CNN that the charges were filed under seal, with a federal court in New York's eastern district having jurisdiction over the case.

The embattled Republican, who recently returned to the state he represents to show solidarity with former President Donald Trump in his historic arraignment before getting chased off by protesters, will be returning to New York on Wednesday. He is expected to appear in court to face these charges.

The FBI, as well as the Department of Justice's public integrity prosecutors, have been examining the New York congressman's claims and allegations of false statements, as well as his campaign finance filings and potential campaign finance violations.

The charges against Santos will be unsealed once he appears in court.

George Santos Claims He Did Not Know About the Charges

Following news of the congressman being charged, the Associated Press tried to reach Santos for a comment. He told the outlet, "This is news to me." He claimed in a phone interview that this was the first time he was called about the matter.

Santos, who admitted to lying about his Jewish ancestry, his past as a drag queen in Brazil, his college degree, his Wall Street background, and many other fabrications, has been facing calls for resignation, not just from constituents and Democrats, but fellow Republicans as well. This was clear when Republican Senator Mitt Romney was seen confronting Santos on camera on the House floor.

Santos has since resisted these calls to resign amid all the lies he has been saying. The embattled New York congressman even announced recently that he was running for re-election despite all the controversies hounding him.

Aside from the Department of Justice and FBI investigation, Santos is also facing another inquiry from the bipartisan Congressional Ethics Committee.

George Santos Charges Renew Calls For His Resignation

With the charges against Santos being announced by the DOJ, many have reiterated their calls for George Santos to leave Congress, according to CBS News.

Rep. Ritchie Torres, a New York Democrat, stated that while the details of the charges are still not clear, "either Rep. Santos must resign or House Republican leadership, under Speaker Kevin McCarthy, must summon the courage to join House Democrats in expelling him." He added that Santos is a "deep rot of corruption at the core of Congress."

Meanwhile, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has stated that he did not place Santos on any committee though he admitted that he has not seen the indictment yet. The California Republican pointed to the rule that if a person has been indicted, they should not serve on any Congressional committees.

McCarthy also admitted that he told Santos he needed to resign when asked what would happen should the embattled Republican be found guilty. "I told him he needed to resign and that is my policies and principles on this," McCarthy said.
