After months of speculation, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is slated to announce his run for the presidency during a discussion with Twitter CEO Elon Musk. The controversial governor has not yet officially announced his run, though it has already been expected by many.

DeSantis is seen as the biggest challenger to former President Donald Trump, with the recently-indicted Trump still leading in the polls and even widening his lead despite all his controversies. As for DeSantis, his image has taken a big hit thanks to his culture war policies and his feud with Disney.

However, this relationship with Elon Musk is seen to be a significant boost to his campaign as it will give him credibility and an introduction to Musk's 140 million Twitter followers. Last year, the South Africa-born tech billionaire stated that he would support DeSantis should he decide to run for president in 2024.

However, NBC News pointed out that this could also backfire on DeSantis as Musk's credibility has also taken a hit in light of his recent controversial comments, as well as his tanking of Twitter since he took over last year.

This announcement for the governor will coincide with a retreat for high-end donors who have already pledged their support for the Trump rival, who has been in talks with the Twitter CEO for weeks now. As for Elon Musk, he has already indicated that he does not think Donald Trump can win back the White House from Joe Biden.

Donald Trump More Than Doubles Lead Vs. Ron DeSantis in the Polls

Meanwhile, as Ron DeSantis prepares to announce his run, his toughest opponent, Donald Trump, has widened his lead over him, more than doubling it as conservative voters seem to be flocking to the ex-POTUS.

According to Newsweek, while DeSantis' right-wing culture war issues have propelled him to the national spotlight, many conservatives are still embracing Trump despite a string of legal losses and setbacks.

A January Harvard-Harris poll showed Trump winning the support of 48% of Republican voters, gaining a comfortable 20-point lead against the Florida governor, who only has 28% of Republican voters backing him in the poll. It was conducted from January 18 to 19 among 2,050 registered voters.

However, a new poll showed that Trump more than doubled his percentage lead. The May poll by Harvard-Harris saw Trump go up to 58% of Republican voters going with him, while DeSantis dipped to just 16%. This means the Trump lead has grown to about 42 points in May, compared to just 20 points earlier this year.

Ron DeSantis Facing Boycotts From Latino Communities

Florida has one of the biggest populations of Hispanics in the United States. However, his recent immigration policies that seek to make it illegal to hire undocumented immigrants, as well as force hospitals to check the residency status of anybody seeking treatment, have many Latinos feeling anxious.

This has resulted in farms going empty and concerns about worker shortages affecting the economy. This also resulted in a boycott from Latino truck drivers, as well as a travel advisory from the League of United Latin American Citizens.

FOX 4 reported that LULAC slammed the DeSantis-backed law that the organization claims only harasses immigrants and is bad for the state's economy.

DeSantis has since defended the law saying, "You can't build a strong economy based on illegality." However, many have pointed out that his culture war policies, such as his recent and controversial immigration law, were all to get brownie points from conservative voters, even though these policies have already alienated him from other groups, especially Latinos, African-Americans, and the LGBTQ+.
