After a hearing to see if he could stand trial, a jury found that suspected California serial stabber Carlos Dominguez is mentally unfit. This comes after a court-appointed psychologist told the jury that Dominguez had psychological issues, a statement that was challenged by prosecutors with the Yolo County District Attorney's Office.

Last week, however, prosecutors dropped their challenge regarding his competency to stand. with the judge dismissing the jury and suspending the University of California Davis serial stabbings case, per CNN.

"At this point, there is no longer a dispute as to his competency and the court has issued an order that Carlos Dominguez is not competent to stand trial," said Judge Samuel McAdam to the jury last Monday.

Carlos Dominguez, a former University of California Davis student, will now be transferred to a state hospital after court-appointed psychologist Dr. Juliana Rohrer testified that the suspected serial stabber was "a textbook example of schizophrenia."

However, the prosecution had a problem with this assessment, stating last Thursday, "We disagreed with the initial doctor's report and how she reached her conclusions regarding competency."

The defense brought in a different psychologist who found that Dominguez "was most likely schizophrenic," prompting prosecutors to drop the case.

In a statement, prosecutors said, "Based on the information that came out in trial and the recently initiated involuntary medication proceedings, we are now in agreement that Mr. Dominguez is presently not competent to stand trial."

A jail tele-psychiatrist also testified that Dominguez has schizophrenia and is gravely disabled. He will remain jailed in the meantime as he awaits his transfer.

"Within due course, hopefully, a short amount of time, he'll be transported to a state hospital to receive treatment with the goal of restoring his competency. From there, only time will tell. The law and the facts will dictate how the case goes," said the judge, suspending the case until Dominguez is deemed competent again.

Yolo County DA Stands by Challenge Against Findings That California Serial Stabber Is Not Competent

Even though the Yolo County District Attorney's Office has dropped its challenge against the main suspect for now, it stood by its decision to challenge the findings on Dominguez's incompetency, according to CBS News.

"We stand by that decision to challenge the findings. However, based on the information that came out in trial and the recently initiated involuntary medication proceedings, we are now in agreement that Mr. Dominguez is presently not competent to stand trial," said the Yolo County DA's Office in a statement.
