Jill Biden, the first lady of the United States, has tested positive for COVID-19, as confirmed by the White House on Monday, Reuters reports.

This development comes just days before President Joe Biden, who has tested negative for the virus, is slated to journey to an upcoming Group of 20 Summit set to take place in India.

Jill Biden, aged 72, exhibited mild symptoms of the virus. Notably, she previously battled COVID-19 in August of the preceding year.

In contrast, President Biden, currently 80 years old, last tested positive for the virus in July 2022.

A statement issued by Jill Biden's communications director, Elizabeth Alexander, disclosed the news: "This evening, the First Lady tested positive for COVID-19. She will remain at their home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware."

Subsequently, President Biden returned alone from Delaware on the evening of Monday.

In response to Jill Biden's positive test result, the White House promptly arranged for President Biden to undergo a COVID-19 test.

The outcome of the test indicated that the president had tested negative for the virus. Notably, he is scheduled to undergo regular testing throughout the week while remaining vigilant for any potential symptoms.

There is no immediate response from the White House regarding the potential impact of Jill Biden's diagnosis on the president's impending international travel plans.

The recent test marks the second time the first lady has received a positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

Her initial diagnosis occurred in August 2022, a short while after President Joe Biden had tested positive for the virus, per CNN.

Back in July, during a White House briefing, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre provided insights regarding the COVID-19 testing protocols for meetings with the president.

This information was shared considering a situation involving members of Israeli President Isaac Herzog's delegation testing positive before a scheduled bilateral meeting.

Jean-Pierre explained, "We have testing protocols when somebody meets with the president. So, I can tell you that anybody who meets with the president gets tested. I do. We all do."

Jill Biden Set To Begin Teaching Courses Again

Jill Biden, who also serves as a professor at Northern Virginia Community College, recently engaged with middle school students in Washington, DC, sharing her intention to resume teaching courses this week, according to CBS News.

However, considering her COVID-19 diagnosis, plans are being adjusted. According to a statement from Elizabeth Alexander, Jill Biden's communications director, she is collaborating with Northern Virginia Community College to ensure that her classes are appropriately covered by a substitute educator.

Jill Biden is the first presidential spouse to maintain a full-time job while residing in the White House.

Jill Biden's diagnosis coincides with a renewed focus on the ongoing impact of COVID-19, particularly as the world enters its fourth cycle of virus activity since the pandemic's emergence.

Data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier this summer indicated a slight uptick in key indicators such as hospital admissions, visits to emergency departments, and positive COVID-19 test results.

Nonetheless, these figures remained significantly lower compared to previous summers. For instance, the week ending on August 19 saw around four new hospital admissions for every 100,000 individuals nationwide-a low level according to CDC benchmarks.

While some counties registered high COVID-19 hospitalization rates, a larger percentage, approximately 3.6% of the country, fell into the medium threshold. Notably, a notable portion of these medium-threshold counties was located in Florida.

In the backdrop of these observations, a new COVID-19 variant, BA.2.86, has captured the attention of scientists due to its substantial mutations.

However, it has only been detected in a limited number of individuals globally.

Dr. Eric Topol, a Scripps Research Translational Institute cardiologist, expressed concern over the virus's ongoing evolution.

He remarked that the virus's relentless adaptation to find new hosts and exploit vulnerabilities poses a continued challenge.
