In his address at the United Nations General Assembly, President Joe Biden emphasized the importance of collaborating with global competitors to harness the potential of artificial intelligence for positive purposes while safeguarding citizens from its associated risks.

He acknowledged the dual nature of emerging technologies, highlighting the need to ensure they serve as tools for opportunity rather than weapons of oppression, according to CNBC.

President Biden stated that the United States and international leaders are actively working to strengthen regulations and policies governing AI technologies.

The goal is to ensure their safety before they are released to the public, focusing on governing artificial technology rather than being governed by it.

Government to Help Regulate Artificial Intelligence

President Joe Biden's remarks come amid efforts by US policymakers to gain a deeper understanding of AI and determine appropriate safeguards that protect American interests without stifling innovation.

This effort occurs in the context of intense global competition, particularly with China, which is also striving to be a leader in AI technology, Globe Echo noted.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer recently hosted a meeting with prominent tech CEOs, including Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, along with labor and civil rights leaders.

The discussion centered on AI and the role of government in regulating it. Schumer emphasized the consensus in the room that the government should play a role in AI regulation.

However, the specifics of AI regulation remain a topic of debate among lawmakers. There are differing opinions on which entity should regulate AI and the extent to which regulation should be applied.

Schumer cautioned against moving too hastily, citing the European Union's rapid creation of the AI Act as an example.

Schumer acknowledged that while regulation should not take years, it also should not be rushed, suggesting a general timeline of months for developing AI regulation.

In the interim, several agencies have asserted their ability to address AI abuses using existing legal authority.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has released a voluntary risk management framework for AI.

Additionally, the Joe Biden administration secured voluntary commitments from leading AI companies to test their tools for security before public release.

Leading US Artificial Intelligence Companies Agree to Safeguard Technology's Development

The White House announced in July that seven leading AI companies in the United States had voluntarily committed to safeguards for the development of AI technology, the New York Times reported.

The companies (Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI) pledged to adhere to new standards for safety, security, and trust in artificial intelligence.

President Joe Biden emphasized the importance of being vigilant about the threats posed by emerging technologies to democracy and values.

He highlighted the serious responsibility of regulating AI while acknowledging its enormous potential benefits.
