Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, wife of former President Jimmy Carter and was once his closest adviser, has died, as confirmed by the Carter Center. She was 96 years old.

She died last Sunday after facing declining health amid a battle with dementia. However, The Carter Center announced that the former FLOTUS "died peacefully, with family by her side" at 2:10 PM inside her rural home in White Plains, Georgia.

Former president Jimmy Carter soon released a statement regarding his wife's passing, stating, "Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me."

Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter was one of the biggest advocates for mental health in the US, and she is even the honorary chairwoman of the President's Commission on Mental Health. She is also a well-known humanitarian, building houses with her husband for Habitat For Humanity.

She helped push Congress for improved mental health coverage and had chosen mental health and problems of the elderly as her trademark policies. When asked about her mental health advocacy, she explained, "I used to come home and say to Jimmy, 'Why are people telling me their problems?' And he said, 'Because you may be the only person they'll ever see who may be close to someone who can help them."

Support and Tributes Flow in for Former FLOTUS Rosalynn Carter

Shortly after her death, the White House paid tribute to the late former FLOTUS, with President Joe Biden and current First Lady Dr. Jill Biden sharing their condolences, with the president stating, "Throughout her incredible life as First Lady of Georgia and the First Lady of the United States, Rosalynn did so much to address many of society's greatest needs."

He added, "She was a champion for equal rights and opportunities for women and girls; an advocate for mental health and wellness for every person; and a supporter of the often unseen and uncompensated caregivers of our children, aging loved ones, and people with disabilities."

"She was well known for her efforts on mental health and caregiving and women's rights, so I hope that during the holidays, you'll include the Carter family in your prayers," Dr. Jill Biden added.

Meanwhile, former FLOTUS Michelle Obama said Carter reminded her to "make the role of First Lady my own, just like she did." She added, "She advocated for better care for the elderly. She advanced women's rights. And she remained a champion for those causes - and many others like building affordable housing for those in need and caring for our nation's caregivers - in the more than four decades that followed."

Former President George W. Bush also added in the tributes, writing, "There was no greater advocate of President Carter, and their partnership set a wonderful example of loyalty and fidelity. She leaves behind an important legacy in her work to destigmatize mental health. We join our fellow citizens in sending our condolences to President Carter and their family," he said in a statement joined by former First Lady Laura Bush."

Meanwhile, Bill Clinton stated, "Throughout her long, remarkable life, she was an unwavering voice for the overlooked and underrepresented."

Donald Trump Made Fun of Jimmy Carter After Rosalynn Carter Went Into Hospice Care

Donald Trump also released a tribute for the former First Lady, stating, "From her days as a US Navy spouse to the Georgia Governor's Mansion to her tenure as First Lady of the United States, and her later work at the Carter Center and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, she leaves behind a legacy of extraordinary accomplishment and national service."

However, just the day before, when Rosalynn Carter entered hospice care, Donald Trump made fun of her husband, Jimmy Carter, as a dig at current President Biden.

During a rally in Iowa, Trump told his supporters that "the happiest person anywhere in this country right now is Jimmy Carter because his administration looked brilliant compared to these clowns."
