It has been three years since the government injected nearly a billion dollars into the economy through stimulus check payments in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite 476 million payments totaling $814 billion, discussions about the possibility of another round of stimulus check payments in 2024 continue to circulate.

However, as 2024 unfolds, it appears that the answer remains the same as the previous year - there will be no new checks, Patriot News noted.

Zack Hellman from Tax Prep Tech emphasized that the focus has shifted towards economic recovery, and additional stimulus check payments are not currently part of legislative agendas.

RED NEXT: Stimulus Check 2022

Previous Stimulus Check Recap

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Congress passed three bills that included stimulus check payments, officially termed Economic Impact Payments.

These payments, totaling over $3,000 per person, were dispersed to eligible Americans. The last of these payments occurred in March 2021.

Despite ongoing rumors about a potential fourth stimulus check, a spokesperson for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) confirmed in November 2023 that there were no plans for additional stimulus check 2024, per VERIFY.

The IRS and the U.S. Department of Treasury websites also provide no information about a fourth payment.

For a new stimulus check to be distributed, Congress would need to pass legislation authorizing the payment, and President Joe Biden would need to sign it into law.

As of now, no such legislation has been introduced or approved.

The three previous stimulus check payments were part of larger legislation passed by Congress and signed by the sitting president.

The first check, amounting to $1,200, was included in the CARES Act in March 2020.

The second check, valued at $600, was part of a spending package passed in December 2020.

The third and final check, totaling $1,400, was included in the American Rescue Plan passed in March 2021.

Dispelling Rumors of a Fourth Stimulus Check

Rumors about a potential fourth stimulus check 2024 gained traction with the emergence of the Omicron variant in late 2021 and early 2022.

However, a new wave of rumors, particularly on social media, prompted government intervention to address the misinformation.

Posts circulating on social media falsely claimed that citizens in 10 states would receive stimulus checks payments at the end of November.

The Internal Revenue Service clarified that there is no such check in the works, emphasizing that no stimulus legislation has been approved since 2021, according to Fortune.

While some states mentioned may have state-specific stimulus initiatives, the IRS urged caution, noting that no federal stimulus payments were imminent.

The three rounds of stimulus check during the pandemic, distributed in March 2020, December 2020, and March 2021, aimed to provide financial relief totaling $814 billion.

Individuals who missed out on the third payment or received less than the full amount can still claim a Recovery Rebate Credit with the IRS.

The deadlines to file a return and claim missing or incomplete 2020 and 2021 credits are May 17, 2024, and April 15, 2025.
