It has been more than half a decade since we've had a new major video game platform.

That fact alone means that the upcoming Madden -- on the new Xbox One and Playstation 4 -- is going to be one to remember.

It may take some time for gamers to settle into the game on new platforms, but let's keep in mind that the Madden series is no stranger to change. Madden football games have had quite the rollercoaster ride; there seems to be a significant tweak, addition, or change to the game every year for one reason or another.

Madden gamers are quick to adapt, and this year's game, which is now for sale, should be no different. Starting with the actual name of this year's game, which has been dubbed "Madden 25," we will see a theme circulating around the 25th anniversary (yes, it has been that long!) of the beginning of Madden. From the days of Sega Genesis -- when the NFL didn't even have a two-point conversion, so neither did Madden -- to today, the game series has spent a quarter of a century entertaining fans and building up the brand of football that dominates contemporary American consumer culture.

The early reviews of the game, which is out this week, highlight the new improvements in the running game, but many people have also mentioned that the game is not a whole lot different than previous years.

"They changed the naming style, and they changed the loading menus, and they even changed their annual cover vote to reflect their quarter-century milestone," Ebenezer Samuel said in a game review for the New York Daily News. "But they still haven't truly changed the game."

Brett Molina at USA Today cited "big improvements to the running game -- particularly while running the Pistol formation or Read-Option plays" as the difference in the new Madden. The new Precision Modifier, he said, adds an extra dimension for making spin moves, jukes, and the like.

While the game is available this week, Madden fans will have to hold out a little longer if they want to experience the game on the new Xbox One and Playstation 4 consoles. However, fans can play Madden on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 platforms starting tomorrow.
