"American Idol" Season 7 contestant Michael Johns passed away on Friday at the age of 35, reports TMZ.

On Thursday, Johns went to the doctor to check up on pain in his ankle. At the time of his visit, doctors did not find anything severely wrong with Johns, so he was cleared to go home that same day.

However, the following day, TMZ reports Johns' ankle pain caused swelling and bruising that made its way up to his leg, and Johns died in his sleep on the couch at his friend's apartment.

Sources close to Johns told TMZ that the fatal blood clot emerged after Johns had twisted his ankle.

Hollywood Life reports that on Saturday, administrators of Johns' Twitter fan page confirmed the news of Johns' death.
