The first round of the PGA Championship is complete and several stars have separated themselves from the pack.

The PGA Championship is the final major of the golf year, after the Masters, US Open and the British Open. Golfers know this will be their final opportunity to make their mark on golf history.

The five biggest headlines of the first day at the PGA Championship are:

1. Ryan Palmer, Lee Westwood and Kevin Chappell Out in Front

Westwood has been on the tour for a long time, so it's no surprise to see him on top after the Thursday. What is a big surprise is that Kevin Chappell is tied for first place with him. Chappell has never even finished a PGA Championship before in his young career; he failed to make last year's cut. Cheppell had an extremely consistent day with zero bogeys and six birdies. Palmer played very well, with just one bogey, on hole eight. Westwood had a wild ride with nine birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey. All three are 6-under-par.

Westwood, Palmer, and Chappell have all never won a major in their careers before.

2. Tiger Woods Continues Struggles

The 14-time majors champion just can't catch a break.

Woods hasn't won a single major since the 2008 US Open, and he hasn't won the PGA Championship since 2007. Woods finished his first round at 3-over-par, good enough for 114th place. The projected cut at this time is just two over. The last time Woods missed a cut at a major? The 2011 PGA Championship. His Day 1 score is very disappointing because of the very low scores we're seeing across the field.

3. Edoardo Molinari Not Going Away

Edoardo Molinari played very well at the British Open last month. He placed seventh, his best ever finish at a major, and his only top 10 finish ever at a major. After the first day, Molinari is sitting at 5-under-par, and is tied for fourth place overall. After a disappointing bogey on 16, he had a clutch birdie on his final hole to make his Day 1 complete. He also has a lot of bragging rights, because his brother (Francesco) is currently 2-over par. Wouldn't want to be at the dinner table tonight.

4. Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson Lurking

Mickelson hasn't had a lot of success at the PGA Championship in his career. His only win victory came in 2005. After the first day, Mickelson is 2-under par and tied for 18th place. After back-to-back bogeys on five and six, Garcia rebounded wonderfully. Garcia would go on to birdie seven and 10 to pull back to even par, then a clutch birdie on 18 to finish 1-under par for the day. The 34-year-old Garcia has finished in second place twice at the PGA Championship, 1999 and 2008.

5. Rory McIlroy Continues Great Play

McIlroy had a very entertaining day. The reigning British Open winner began his day terrifically with three birdies on his first nine holes. However, to open up the back nine McIlroy double bogeyed and bogeyed holes 10 and 11 to drop back to even. It looked as if McIlroy was going "choke" away three shots. Instead, he would recover with four consecutive birdies and a birdie on 18 to finish 5-under par.
