Sarah Silverman can crack a good joke and roast James Franco, but it turns out she can also write a heartfelt obituary.

Silverman recently commemorated her late dog Duck, who was put down over the weekend. The 42-year-old comedian and actress wrote an "obituary type thing" on her long-time companion, which she posted on the celebrity social media site WhoSay.

In her post, Silverman wrote that she adopted the chihuahua-pug mix at a shelter in Van Nuys, Calif., 14 years ago. She estimated that Duck was 19 when he was put down and described him as happy and serene.

"Recently, however, he stopped eating or drinking," she wrote. "He was skin and bones and so weak. I couldn't figure out this hunger strike. Duck had never been political before. And then, over the weekend, I knew. It was time to let him go."

Silverman then wrote that her boyfriend and sister joined her to take Duck to the doctor, where she said her final goodbyes.

"I held him and kissed him and whispered to him well passed his passing," she continued. "I picked him up and his body was limp - you don't think about the head - it just falls. I held him so tight. And then finally, when his body lost its heat, and I could sense the doctor thinking about the imminent rush hour traffic, I handed him over."

The comedian described her late dog as her best friend that was the longest relationship she's had, and her only experience of maternal love. Fans of Silverman may recognize Duck as Doug on Comedy Central's "The Sarah Silverman Program," which ran from 2007 to 2010. Duck made appearances as Doug on the show, and was featured in the opening credits.

Aside from appearing in the Comedy Central Roast of James Franco earlier this week, Silverman has a new comedy special coming to HBO. "Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles," is a one-hour special that is set to premiere on Nov. 23, in association with Funny or Die.
